I was 13; it was 2:30 in the morning and even though the walls of my room were painted white, the room was orange. The house next door was engulfed in flames. A fireman was standing at the bottom of the stairs urging my mother to vacate our home for safety precautions. She answered him by throwing a full box of framed pictures down that flight of stairs and told him to "come back - I have more". There was no way she was leaving without those images of her mother, whom she lost as a teenager. The couch, the lamps, the books - they can all be replaced; but not the images of her mom. That's when I learned the irreplaceable value of an image.
